Understanding Psychology

Everyone is a psychologist by virtue of their observation.  We always try to understand their surroundings, themselves and others. In this process of understanding, we create our own hypothesis based on first sight/impression and validate against further impressions. However scientifc way of understanding (science ) the subject has much more depth than living through perceived assumptions and perceptions which may not be correct.


Understanding the behaviour patterns from the perspective of science will give a true picture.  The following are the values and standards on which the scientfic understanding is based on.

Accuracy: A commitment to gathering and evaluating information about the world in as careful, precise, and error-free a manner as possible.

Objectivity: A commitment to obtaining and evaluating such information in a manner that is as free from bias as humanly possible.

 Skepticism: A commitment to accepting findings as accurate only after they have been verified over and over again, preferably by many different scientists working independently.

Open-Mindedness: A commitment to changing one’s views—even views that are strongly held—in the face of evidence that shows these views to be inaccurate.

Understanding ourselves and others more closely to what we exactly we are, rather than based on assumptions and perceptions makes our life more easier in terms of  behaviour and our response to that behaviour. Is common sense enough for us to understand others behavior to ensure that we are on the right track all the time. I don’t think so, we always get into contradictions.  One such case is the following.

“Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” (when people are separated from those they love, they miss them and so experience increased attachment to them)  Vs “Out of sight, out of mind.” (When I’m not near the boy/girl I love, I love the boy/girl I’m near.)
